Bassim - Strathfield

When you walk through Strathfield, it's pretty hard to not walk past all the Korean restaurants which seem to be filled with fantastic barbeque flavours. One that's on the corner that piqued our interest was Bassim. We asked one of our Korean friends how that restaurant is and he said that it was 'pretty good'. Hence, one night, we went to test it out.

Bassim
Pretty much from the moment we stepped in, we were starting to think that it was a mistake. The whole atmosphere was crazy smokey (ie. ventilation here is kind of poor), and there are hardly any Korean's eating here (a bad sign). Nonetheless, we were seated and barbeque smelling already, so we might as well make the most of it.

The side dishes were pretty normal. The pickled chinese cabbage and the raddish were yummy. The kimchi was also not bad. The other stuff - lettuce, shallots, sauce - all went well with our chosen barbequed meats.

I picked a beef galbi (marinated beef ribs) whilst hubby wanted the samgyapsal (pork belly) and we also ordered a tofu soy based soup. We cooked the beef ribs first, and whilst we cooked that, 4 different waiters came up to us and said that we had to tell them when we were going to cook the pork belly as they have to change the grill for us. I guess that's very very important since we were reminded oh so many times. The beef galbi was well marinated and quite tasty. The pork belly, on the other hand, was less awesome. It was really really thin and when chucked on, didn't leave a lot of pork for you to taste. The soup was tasty and super sizzling hot.

So we've had better meats at a Korean bbq and in a better environment. Probably won't be back to this one... not sure what our Korean friend was thinking when he said that it was 'pretty good'.
